England Rowing

The England Team is an opportunity for rowers to trial either in crews or small boats to earn the chance to represent England with their coach, fellow club members or just by themselves.

Representing England is a unique development opportunity for both rowers and coaches wishing to gain international experience. For some, it could be the first step to representing Great Britain.

The England Team has seen many Olympic and Paralympic rowers receive their first international representation. If selected you’ll be following the footsteps of; Charlotte Hodgkins Bryne (2015), Charlotte Booth (2014), Emily Ford (2013), Laurence Whiteley (2012), and Sir Steve Redgrave (1978).

Trials

England trials for the Home International Rowing Regatta 2023 will be held at the London Docklands, on Sunday, 9 July or through GBRT Junior Crew formation.

We welcome and encourage entries from anyone who meets the eligibility requirements to represent England. This information, as well as full details of the 2023 England Selection Policy, can be found using the link below.

British Rowing is responsible for the selection of individuals and crews representing England only. Teams for Scotland and Wales are selected by Scottish Rowing and Welsh Rowing respectively. See section 3a British Rowing: Articles of Association

The Home International Rowing Regatta

The Home International Rowing Regatta is a historic annual competition dating back to 1962 seeing the four ‘Home Nations’ of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland compete. Every race counts towards combined team trophies for Junior Women, Junior Men, Senior Women and Senior Men.

A new racing format, announced in 2020, means rowers will have a minimum of two races, with the majority racing three times. Racing takes place over 2000m for all boat classes (shown below). With the 4x and 8+ racing a second time over 500m.

The 2023 Home International Rowing Regatta will take place on Saturday, 22 July at Lough Rinn, County Leitrim, Ireland and will be hosted by Rowing Ireland.

	Jono Cheesman (Equipment Manager)	Jonathan is currently splitting his coaching time between Oxford and Dorney, getting to grips with college bumps racing and helping to introduce the youngsters of Slough to rowing. He has been coaching for over 25 years, working with athletes from beginners all the way up to international level, from Bedford to Oxford via Newcastle, London and South Wales, racing all over Europe, North America and Africa.
	Lucy McNulty (Safeguarding Officer)	Having found rowing as an adult, Lucy has enjoyed the sport for 25 years, competing in several masters events. She was Club Welfare Officer at Molesey Boat Club for 4 years and England Rowing Safeguarding Lead since 2020.
	Eira Parry (England Delegate)	Eira joined the Home International Team in 2017. She is the England Delegate and Secretary of the Management Committee of Home International Rowing who oversee the governance of both the Regatta and Beach Sprints events. Eira has been involved in rowing in some way since childhood, either as a participant, a coach or a passionate volunteer for British Rowing. Eira worked for over a decade on the Start scheme, working with many young athletes on a pathway towards success at World Championships and Olympic Games. As well as her involvement with HIR, she also supports the GB Women’s and Beach Sprints Teams as an independent selector.

England Rowing and its Home International Rowing Teams are part of British Rowing’s England Pathway. As part of this all athletes and coaches will be asked to complete a self-reflection form.
