Stourport celebrates Regatta success

The threat of Hurricane Bertha didn’t dampen the high quality racing at Stourport’s home regatta. With clubs from all over the UK in attendance, racing was at a consistently high level over the 1000m course.

The weather conditions were generally kind to the rowers and spectators after just a few rain-soaked sessions, with competitors ranging from Juniors to Masters and with many high-status crews in between. The big winners of the weekend were Worcester, Bristol, Liverpool Victoria and hosts Stourport who claimed 19 wins overall.

Notable victories for the hosts included Shauna McClaren and Lydia Chance in the WJ15 double sculls, and a fantastic performance by Bruce McClaren to win in the J17 single scull event.

The new Champion of the Severn sprint event drew the biggest cheers from the spectators as Worcester RC sought revenge for their loss in the final against Stourport at the recent Bewdley Regatta. Worcester who had put in a huge effort over the first three quarters of the race held off a late charge from Quintin in a very tight finish to seal a thoroughly deserved win in the final of the short 500m sprint.

Despite their 19 wins, Stourport were unable to claim the Victor Ludorum as the home club, leaving Liverpool Victoria to claim the honours this year with 12 wins overall. Winning crews were received by Stephen Williams, Mayor of Stourport, and presented with a special edition pot.

“Racing has been exceptional, and the visiting clubs have made it a very special weekend for us and the town,” said Pete Lashford, Stourport Boat Club President.
