GB Rowing Team quad in crystal clear win after foggy start in Hamburg
The GB Rowing Team’s junior men’s quad warmed up in the Hamburg fog this morning but later raced to a crystal clear quarter-final win to secure a semi-final slot at the World Junior Championships.
Steven Parsonage, Rowan Law, Samuel Meijer and Chris Lawrie led virtually from buzzer to finish line. At 500m they had over a second on the opposition, led by Belarus. By halfway, they had almost doubled their lead.
Behind them Belgium overtook Belarus but the GB boat held its lead to secure victory in 6:05.18 to Belgium’s 6:08.46. Belarus also progressed to tomorrow’s semi-finals in third place, holding off the Chinese by mere tenths of a second.
Oliver Jonas and Arthur Doyle had earlier opened the GB Rowing Team’s racing programme of the day and locked down a semi-final place by taking second to Germany in their quarter-final.
Germany led from the outset with the British boat keeping first Poland and then Moldova at bay to ensure their safe passage to the next phase, finishing in 7:03.25 to Germany’s 7:00.94.
The GB junior men’s eight were involved in a very tight repechage to close out the day’s programme. Producing a storming second half, the GB boat qualified for Sunday’s final in second place in a time of 5:54.31 behind France.
As in their heat, the GB combination of Liam Tustin, George Pearce, Alexander Barakat, Matthew Aldridge, Henry Lambe, James Clarke, Luke Towers, William England and Alex Gass, the cox, started modestly in a race from which only two boats could qualify for the finals. They were fifth at the 500m marker but had pulled themselves up into fourth at halfway in a race led by France, followed by Serbia.
With 500m to go the British boat were up to third and had just over a second to make up on Serbia. From there they launched their final push and made the impact needed even though they were being chased themselves by the USA.
Only the junior men’s double scull of James White and Fraser Russell suffered a setback to their hopes of reaching the top twelve in Germany when they took fourth place in their quarter-final in a race won by Greece. The British duo were third at halfway.
Tomorrow’s race programme has been rescheduled due to predicted lunchtime thunderstorms. The A/B semi-finals will now start at 09.00 UK time.
