A forecast of difficult winds and high swell has forced organisers to postpone the flagship Gig Rowing event for three weeks, with the Junior event now scheduled for Sunday 2 October at Stithians Lake, and the Men’s event moved to Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October at Newquay. The Newquay County Gig Championships traditionally signal the end of the rowing season for gig rowers, with clubs from across the Gig Rowing spectrum sending crews to compete for the title of County Gig Champions. The event has been held annually since 1970, and has only been cancelled twice previously – in 1975 and 1983 – both times due to bad weather. The Women’s event took place a fortnight ago, and was also disrupted by inclement weather as the first day’s racing was called off after just 15 races. Falmouth Ladies eventually secured their 10th consecutive title on the Sunday, on which crews reaching the final had to race four times in a single day.
