Royal Canadian Henley

Scottish Rowing Report from Roy Sinclair

Following a most successful Commonwealth Rowing Championships, crews
representing Scottish Rowing took part in the 128th Royal Canadian
Henley regatta at St Catherines, Ontario,
Canada.

Two men’s pairs took part in the heats of the Championship Pairs
event last Saturday with Alan Sinclair from Ross-shire and Andy Holmes from Lochwinnoch
qualifying for the final by winning the fastest heat of the day whilst brothers
Chris and Jonny Logan (Glasgow RC) just missed qualification in their heat by
the narrowest of margins. In Sunday’s final, the Sinclair/Holmes pair had a fierce
battle all the way down the 2000 metre course with a Canadian crew from Mendota
RC but had to settle for second place a mere 1.58 seconds behind the winning
crew.

In the Championship Single Sculls event, Holmes qualified for the
final from second place in the semi-final whilst Sinclair just missed
qualification by a narrow margin. In the final of this event which took place only
one hour after the pairs race, Holmes challenged all the way down the course
but was unable to secure a medal position.

Stephanie McDowall (Glasgow RC) and Alex Gemie (Aberdeen BC)
both took part in the women’s Championship Single Sculls but were unlucky to
narrowly miss out on qualification for the final of this event.
