The boats were purchased through British Rowing’s Explore Rowing programme. The six boats have all been named after famous explorers: Ernest Shackleton, Captain Cook, Marco Polo, Mungo Park and Dr. Livingstone. The final boat, an Explorer single, was named after Roz Savage. Unfortunately Roz couldn’t be there but sent a message of good will: “I wish I could be there with you today for the naming ceremony but even though my commitments keep me in Sans Francisco, I’ll be there with you in spirit and will raise a glass tonight in the general direction of Warrington!” The Explore Rowing programme is British Rowing’s flagship Olympic Legacy programme funded by Sport England. As part of the programme funding packages are awarded to clubs to purchase stable boats. These boats open up rowing to a wide range of participants and are particularly suited to teaching people to row.
