Five medals for second consecutive year

GB Rowing has won five medals at the World U23 Championships for the second consecutive year. The team picked up two golds, two silver and a bronze in the event which concluded today in Amsterdam.

Zac Purchase, of Marlow RC, and Hester Goodsell of York University both dominated their lightweight single scull finals today to win a gold apiece by clearwater.

The lightweight men’s pair of Paul Kelly and James Clarke were disappointed to be pipped on the line by Italy after leading until the final five strokes of their final. However, a silver medal is an upgrade for this duo who won bronze in the same event a year ago.

Britain’s second silver came from the lightweight men’s quadruple scull – described by ARA International Manager David Tanner as a "project which we’ve been maturing for 18 months".

Jessica Eddie and Anna Bebington added the final touch with a bronze in the open weight women’s pair.  They were in silver medal position for a time during the race but were overhauled by Germany in the closing stages.

Alex Gregory and Colin Smith, in the men’s double, were comfortably third at half-way. They were two lengths up on the fourth-placed boat with 500m to go when Gregory seemed to suffer a milder repeat of the breathing difficulties he experienced in the heats of the senior World Cup Finals in Lucerne two weeks ago. They had to settle for fourth place.

Disaster also struck for the lighweight women’s double scull who were in a medal-winning position until catching a boat stopping "crab" just past the half-way point and ultimately finished fourth.

The men’s coxed four and women’s coxless four were both fifth and the men’s four were sixth.

"We’ve had a good day overall",  added Tanner.  "Five medals for the second time is not bad at all. We also had some near misses which were frustrating".
